I like gin and tonics usually, but for shooting or drinking neat I like whiskey. For fruity drinks I like flavored vodka, but that's a rarity in my drink reportoire.
I love it because it's a lot cleaner and safer than staying at a cheap motel. It let's me stay in or very near interesting places such as national parks. It's inexpensive lodging. It's a way to meet interesting people.
Personally, I find that there are a fair number of cheaper whiskeys that I prefer over Jack Daniels. Four Roses, Jim Beam Black Label, and J&B all come to mind (two bourbons, and a scotch).
According to a friend of mine who is getting his masters in food science, the harshness comes from an excess of carbonyl groups in the drink. These break down during the aging process which is why aged bourbon is smoother than unaged.
