Allergy To Alcohol

Have you ever heard about any kind of allergic reaction that happens because of alcohol intake. I have not heard of any so there was a sudden thought in my mind if any such kind of allergies existed or not?

Me too I haven't heard of any allergy resulting from consumption of alcohol. I have only seen a few people vomit after taking alcohol in excess. I am sure there are going to be cases of people allergic alcohol.

I have a bad reaction after over exposure to alcohol- I wake up with a helluva headache, feeling really crappy... Sorry, couldn't resist.

Is it only on overdrinking or normal drinking as well. I mean most if us end up in headache and nausea after we are over drunk. So I'm really confused if it is an allergy or a normal reaction to overdrinking.

Isn't that the case for all us after a heavy night of drinking? did you consult a doctor in order for him to assess your condition?

I cannot speak to the allergies, but my bother had a trace of tuberculosis which meant that he could not drink for his 21st birthday, which is kind of a bummer. Glad I have neither of those though.

Till82, you took the words right out of my mouth! That's the kind of allergic reaction that a lot of us here experience almost every weekend! But other than that, I've never heard of anyone being allergic to any type of alcohol. Personally I would hate to be allergic to something so.... necessary.

That was a good one. Allergic reaction to such an important necessity will be really terrible. We all are really blessed because we all are spared. Lol

The more that I think about it this would probably be something that I would just learn to accept and be okay with. I would be a lot healthier, but second hand I would have to worry about.

Exactly, even though it might not be a big deal nor will it have negative impact on a person's health, you can still try and enjoy a drink once in a while.

If this (allergy to alcohol) does exist, I've never heard of it. It's even strange to think that this kind of allergy exists because I've never even heard or read anything related to it. o_O

Just google it and you will get your answer, and here it is, as taken from the search results:

"Alcohol can also trigger allergic reactions or irritate existing allergies. A Danish study found that for every additional alcoholic drink consumed in a week, the risk of seasonal allergies went up 3 percent. Researchers believe that bacteria and yeast in the alcohol produce histamines."

So the scientific answer is yes, they trigger allergies.

Thank you...I had already checked in on Google. But it was only textbook information and I wanted to know about the practical situation based on personal experiences.

Everything is there on Google but if we go by what is on the internet then what is the point of forum discussions.

There are many reasons that alcohol can cause allergic reactions, and some examples are gluten and wheat and it is found in the malted barley that they use to make beer. Sometimes histamine that is found in red wine can cause allergic reactions. Also you could consider sulfer dioxide or sulfites and even people that are allergic to grapes as well-but thats kind of rare. So its not just the alcohol itself but the things produced while making it?

Could cases of people throwing up after some intake of alcohol be likened to allergy to the substance. Well I think taking more alcohol than the system can hold is the main cause of vomiting.

Well, if you're looking for people with personal experience about having allergic reactions to alcohol, then you should have been more specific and told us to share our personal experience. Because in your 1st post you were just asking if alcohol can trigger allergies.

Yeah, exactly, i don't think or recall anyone that i know that has vomited only by drinking a few drinks.

I have never heard about the alcohol allergy but I suppose it does exist, since the water allergy is also a thing. So why not alcohol. But personally I don't know anyone that is allergic to alcohol (nor water in fact, but I've heard stories).

Does allergy to water also exist? This is,so strange for me. May be it is the time I should check Google for it.

I don't think throwing up after drinking is caused by drinking too much alcohol than the body can hold but rather inability to conduct oneself properly after drinking alcohol. It happened to me a couple of times, and I believe I could control that simply by conducting myself properly afterwards. Conducting of oneself is however, subjective. What works for you may not work for another. Generally, I think going straight to bed immediately after drinking is not a good idea.

I don't know of any allergies to alcohol tho.
