Are Cigars Less Damaging Than Cigarettes?

Basically, you don't inhale the smoke of a cigar but the amount of nicotine put into one is significantly higher than a regular cigarette's. What do you think?

I wouldn't think they would be. They are bigger then cigarettes so there would be more nicotine in one but then again you don't smoke cigars as often as you would smoke cigarettes. I guess it depends on how often and how many you smoke.

Well you don't inhale cigars so there is little chance of lung cancer. Lets face it no tobbacco product is harmless but you can try to minimize the damage...Certainly it is not good to have a cigar in your mouth all day long!!

I think if you don't smoke a cigar as often as you would with a cigarette, and if you only smoke a Cigar, then you would probably be fine. You should give your lungs some time to breathe fresh air. The more often you smoke a Cigar, the more are the chances of you damaging your lungs.

They are just as bad as cigarettes, they're the same thing just wrapped in a different type of rolling paper.

Well the cigar smoke never goes into your lungs, which seems to be where the most damage from cigarettes happens. So by logic, cigars would be less harmful since the amount of smoke actually inhaled is minimal.

Still doesn't make it healthy. :D

Unfortunately the idea that cigars are less damaging then cigarettes is a myth. When you smoke a cigar you still breath in the smoke, even though it's not directly. It probably does the same amount of damage as second hand smoke.

There is no such thing as completely safe tobacco. On the other hand, the average cigar smoker enjoys far less smokes than cigarette smokers and they don't inhale into their lungs. The tongue, mouth, and related, however, are exposed to the deleterious effects. Personally, I don't cigarettes nor want to, but an occasional cigar is not the end of the world. IMHO, of course, I'm no doctor. ;)

Not only that but there are a lot of people that don't smoke cigars as often as they would cigarettes, so they inhale as much smoke, but as you said it does affect other parts of your body.

They should be less damaging and not because of the nicotine amount but because they do not have additives in them while cigarettes have a lot of them along with a high percentage of tar but I think I have read somewhere that the tar produced in cigars is more harmful than that one produced in cigarettes.

I don't think either is really "safe," but if you are asking which is the lesser of the two evils I would say cigars. You don't see people getting hooked to smoking cigars. They will chain smoke a cig, but not a cigar.

Cigars are not likely to cause lung cancer or damage to your heart of lungs. You are not ingesting the smoke, so I think that they are less damaging than cigarettes because you don't internalize the smoke.

I would imagine that cigars are equal, if not more dangerous than cigarettes. Cigars are fairly big and produce a ton of smoke. I know that you may not be likely to develop lung cancer from cigars, but you are definitely at risk for cancer of the mouth. I'd like to think that this is just as bad as any form of cancer. Personally, I don't think any form of cancer is a good sign.

I think that cigars are less harmful because you don't fully inhale the smoke, and with a cigarette you send it all up to your lungs. But they are both bad for you, of course.

Cigars are definitely not less offensive to humans than the cigarette would be. The nicotine content in one cigar can be more than ten times more potent that in one cigarette, therefore if you should smoke five cigars it would be like having a 20-pack of cigarettes. Both are extremely harmful to your health, therefore, substituting one for the other isn't a wise move

No, that is not really true. The nicotine content may be higher but you are not inhaling them directly into your lungs unlike cigarettes. You are not affecting your pulmonary system at all with cigars. I don;t think having one every so often is very harmful to your health at all personally.

I agree, cigarettes might have stayed with all the bad rep but all tobacco derivatives are carcinogenic.

They are, all bad, but you typically don't hear of cigar smokers dying from lung cancer or heart disease. This is a case of picking the least harmful poison if you choose to smoke, or can't quit for whatever reason. However, I don't think anything is bad...except for maybe cigarettes,,if done in moderation.

To quote Red Foxx as Fred Sanford, "Smoking less and enjoying it more." Technically, if you are smoking less cigars than you would cigarettes, than I would think you would be less likely to get cancer. However, don't fool yourself, neither option is safe by any means at all.
