Your Kind Of Bar Service

I was talking to a friend about how bars have changes; from intimate places, to nightlife venues, to whatever they are today.

Each bar, in each city located in the different places around the world have "something" special for the visitor, whether the ambiance, the good service, the wine selection, live piano music, or else.

So I'm wondering, what's your kind of ideal bar setting when hanging out around your city?

That is a good question. I think my favorite bar is one in Crystal City Virginia. It is the top of of one of the hotels...Marriot i think, and revolves and offers a panoramic view of Washington DC. They always have individual snack dishes on the tables, and it is really nice to have a window seat and look at the lights of the city at night.

I prefer more of a pub style place to drink and not a dance bar. When I go out I like to feel relaxed and maybe sing a little karaoke. It also has to be a good place to dance. We really enjoy an evening out of dancing. I like a small, friendly place where great people hang out.

Pub. Looong bar so you can actually sit there with your friends without having people constantly behind you trying to get drinks from in between. And some small local rock band playing live. ;)

That sounds like a great place to me. I like when bars have a band playing. It just adds to the atmosphere and makes for a fun evening out.

Yeah, a live band really changes the atmosphere. I rarely go to bars nowadays, I used to do it a couple of times a week back in the day but now it's maybe once or twice a month. But it's pretty much always a bar with live music now.

It really depends...

Sometimes I'm just trying to blow off steam, or talk to girls, or something, and the bar where I'm at doesn't really matter.
Those nights, I prefer to keep it moving, and not stay too much time in one place.

When I just want to talk crap with friends it's different.
I like confortable, not crowded, no loud music.

Definitely no strobes and irritating lights like that.
Music that is too loud is also annoying.

But I guess it's too hard to explain what's the perfect scenario, since I never know what mood I'm going to be in.
I also like to get to know new places often.

I think there has always been a range pub/bars/whatever-you-want-to-call-thems. I prefer a casual place that is clean and serves food. The kind of place you could take your grandmother during the day but party at night. And owned by local people, not a chain.

I'm not that fond of dancing so a basic pub should be just fine for me. The nightlife aspect is crucial for me, I need to feel that when I step into a bar.

There are so many different types of bar, pubs, night clubs so you can usually find one to suit your mood. Sometimes it nice to go to a place that is quiet where you can just sit around and talk. I do like sports bars too. They always have a good atmosphere especially during an event like the Super Bowl.

I am not one for dancing or "rave" style bars. I like the pub style that have good food. I like a relaxed atmosphere that is not so loud that you have to scream over the music playing to just tell the person next to you something. Also, I am not a smoker so I prefer a place that has no smoking allowed.

Yeah, sports bars can be good too...but some of the ones I know about don't really have great food. They all serve some variety of pub grub, but the emphasis is on the games. The drinks are basically centered around beer it seems.

All the bars here are smoke free so it makes for a good atmosphere. I remember when you could smoke it bars and it was terrible. When you got home your clothes and hair smelled so strong of smoke. It was terrible. I definitely don't miss that.

Well, I like the idea of having an cosy atmosphere, one where you can comfortably sit with friends, have a few snacks and not have to shout at the bartender for your drinks.
I don't mind too much on the smoking side of things, as long as it is separate from the main bar, it should be fine. If the place has an outside seating area then great!
I would mainly go to pubs and steak houses rather than nightclubs and rave bars, that is not my idea of a good time at all.
But hey everyone to their own.

First off, I dislike and even condemn extremely noisy bars. I mean, where you can't get off the other's person ear. You can't have a deep conversation there.

Same, noisy bars might as well be dance clubs in my opinion. A nice quiet bar where people can talk with their friends or enjoy a drink alone without being bothered is my ideal place to unwind. Unfortunately, there are none in my area that fir the criteria, so I get by with a trip to the local liquor store and relaxing at home with takeout and a movie in the living room with friends or by myself.

Noisy bars are only fun if you have spent the last two hours pregaming and are ready to PARTY.

Otherwise, a nice chill spot with a good vibe and JUST enough people to make a crowd is perfect.

I agree. However, like the person above me, I consider them as clubs more than just bars in the first place. A club is exactly the place of a high-energy environment. Speaking of bars, they are usually pretty much in the same boat. However, that level of energy there is a bit lower.

Basically, a bar is the club with no dancefloor. So, the club element is still present and pretty strong.

Nonetheless, the way I distinguish between bars and clubs is a little bit different. A dancefloor thing doesn't really matter to be, as I'm not a huge fan of interacting right on a dancefloor. Instead, the possibility of having a conversation with no huge distractions is the thing that really means a lot to me. If it's high = that's a bar, if it's kind of low = that's a club.

My kind of bar is usually a social club. First, they keep out the riff-raff through membership status. They keep the drink prices extremely low because they are a club. They almost always have insanely great food. It's very "everybody knows your name" kind of place. I used to love the Maennerchor Club of Sharon, PA, but now I'm really kind of stuck on the Central Social in Warren, OH.

I used to live in Erie, my home town. There is a Mannechor club there as well. Erie is chock full of those kinds of clubs. In fact we had my dad's 75th at one. It is kind of nice because alot of the people know each other and participate with each other in golf, dance, civic activities or whatever it is they do. The drink prices usually are affordable, and the food is good.
