Beers And Pubs

Does anyone feel like beers are seen as a more "appropriate" drink when you go to a bar or pub? Seems like everyone is enjoying a beer with their friends, but you rarely see people drink whisky or wine.

I think the reason for this really is that they are cheaper. I think you would see people drinking whisky and wine at the pub if they were as affordable as beer. Also, since beer is lower in alcohol, most people probably feel more comfortable drinking it.

I guess those are fair points. I don't drink too much at bars because I want to get home in one piece, haha!

I experience the opposite when visiting the bars in my town. I frequent a bar called "W. Wolfskill" in California. It's a beautiful cocktail bar- which might be the reason people aren't ordering beers left and right. Their sister bar is called The Salted Pig, where beer is much more frequent, but I still see people ordering cocktails and wine. I think it depends on the kind of bar you go to. Most bars are full of people ordering beer left and right, but there are a few out there serving cocktails and such that people can't resist. :)

In regards to driving home , it is crazy to risk getting a DUI. I think drinking more than a drink or two, at a bar is just asking for trouble. I think drinking at home, or somewhere where you don't have to drive, is just much safer and more sensible.

It's my go to drink if I go to a bar. It just seems like it's the sort of drink that suits everyone. Rich, poor, everyone likes a good beer.

Well, beers are still expensive in pubs. The bar I frequent doesn't have that big of a price difference between whisky and beer. :p

Wow, where I'm from whiskey can be four times more expensive then beer. The whiskey or any other spirit is really over priced.

Thank goodness for people like you! There are so many people that will hop onto the road after drinking, thinking that they can manage their alcohol. It makes me so happy to see people that are openly responsible with their drinking. :)

Obviously, beer is more affordable than whiskey. Whiskey is not a type of mass consumption liquor as beer is so in an ordinary crowd you would most likely see more beer than you would whiskey. Another consideration is that beer is at a lower alcohol content level than whiskey.

Yeah, I don't know where you're from but bars here in Romania are weird like that. I guess it depends on the brands as well.

I'm from Portugal and whiskey or any spirit drink is always more expensive then beer.

I think that every drink has it's place and crowd. I drink beer when I am happy, when I want to go and have fun and I'm in good spirit. ON the other hand, when I am moody, sad or just feeling blue I like to drink wine or some stronger spirit like whiskey. In bars, with friends, I usually take beer.

That's true but I believe that's because people are already used to beer and it's way cheaper than a whisky too.

This is true, everyone drinks in a different way, I associate wine to food while beer is the sort of drink I have when I go out or have a BBQ. Spirits I associate to special occasions.

I am generally a wine drinker, but every so often I get a taste for beer. Since it is hot here now, I had a taste for beer and I bought some last night. It is just one of the things that is good to have when the weather is a bit oppressive.

One thing doesn't impede the other, just because you are a regular wine drink doesn't mean that you can't enjoy the refreshing taste of an ice cold beer. ;)

I like the Irish pub system for drinking beer and you can just walk home when your done like in the rural villages over there or Dublin,or you can even get a bite to eat at them. They are a good place to socialize and get out of the rain as well, also make new friends and watch the latest sporting event. For the locals, its a refuge from the daily chores and such,it also seems like a great lifestyle as well(maybe even have a glass of smooth irish whiskey with your beer)?

I think it all boils down to price. Beer is definitely a lot cheaper than other alcoholic drinks, so most people would be inclined to buy that over the more expensive options. Whisky and wine are more appropriate for fine dining in restaurants.
