I think that Rum has always been popular. It is also increasingly being flavored. I think that Tequila and Vodka are probably the most purchased beverages, but Rum is probably close behind these beverages, and Bourbon of course has always been popular.

Well it seems that when you talking about something being the new something, it is just a trend, so that would make me think it is pretty random. All it takes is one event to catch on and before you know it it is in style.

There are some great Rums out there for a good cheap price as well,and they are really good for making a drink out of, like a good light Rum called "cruzan light aged" which runs around $12.99. This Rum is actually made in bourbon barrels in which it ages so it has a touch of the oak taste as well with some mild hints of molasses.

I don't believe (because I don't see any real reason for that to happen) that Rum reaches the status of Bourbon someday. In fact, I think they are quite opposite.
