It seems like they will need some good coppers in the future, because there are fewer than 50 master coopers in the entire United States right now. The wine makers and distillers are investing in the cooperage process and making their own barrels these days- and it gives them complete control, and they like that. You could maybe see about asking at your local winery or distillery for a apprenticeship though?
 
I am not all that familiar with what a cooper does and all of that but it is still surprising to me to learn that there are only 50 in such a large country. Makes me wonder where things are going here in the near future.
 
To be honest, I don't know anything about barrel making. I'll have to do my research on this and then get back to you.
