The Glenrothes Hammers Home 51-Year-Old
Speyside distillery The Glenrothes has released The 51 – a 51-year-old single malt that can only be freed from its packaging with a custom hammer that is supplied with purchase of the whisky.
The Glenrothes The 51 is a spirit derived from a pair of casks, one which was said to donate notes that ‘evoke the fragility of an orchid’s scent’, while the other supplied notes of ‘luxurious’ richness and depth. The results are said to produce notes of almond, peach and watermelon.
As for the packaging, the whisky is encased in a sustainably sourced Jesmonite column which must be smashed open, preferably with the distillery-provided custom black hammer. Once the whisky’s freedom is suitably obtained, the owner is then invited to return the fragments of the column to The Glenrothes, where a Kintsugi artist will restore them with precious metal, transforming the remnants into a one-of-a-kind vase in which a real orchid can grow.
Only a mere 100 bottles of The Glenrothes The 51 are being made available worldwide at the low, low price of $46,500 per bottle [small black hammer included].
