Old Speckled Hen Learns Spanish
Venerable English ale Old Speckled Hen has been sold by pub chain Greene King to Barcelona-based Estrella Damm – the sale will include all Old Speckled Hens, including its non-alcoholic and golden ale versions.
For the moment, Greene King says it will continue to brew the ale in the Bury St Edmunds, UK, location but that will move the ale production to Estrella Damm’s brewery in Bedford, which opened last year.
Old Speckled Hen was originally created by the Oxford-based Morland Brewery in 1979 to celebrate the MG Car Company’s 50th anniversary and enjoyed a 20-year run before being purchased by Greene King in 1999. The commemorative beer was named “Old Speckled Hen” after its resemblance to the MG Featherlight car.
Old Speckled Hen beers will still be available in Greene King pubs and major supermarkets in the UK.
