The Whisky Exchange Adds 23 Year Old Whisky
“New year, new spirits” seems to be the 2024 motto of online spirits retailer The Whisky Exchange. The company unveiled a limited edition 23-year-old Yellow Spot Irish whiskey.
The whisky, named Yellow Spot 1999, was aged for 23 years in ex-Bourbon barrels before moving to an ex-Malaga cask for its second maturation. The dual maturation process added roundness and notes of sultanas, vanilla, and oak. The edition is limited to only 564 bottles.
With the launch of Yellow Spot in 2012, the brand has forged a reputation for being ‘elegant and flavourful’, complementing Green Spot, Gold Spot, and Red Spot.
The Whisky Exchange Releases Yellow Spot 23 Years Old
The Spot Whiskeys distillery posted on its website that “Yellow Spot is special in that it contains whiskey that has been matured for a full 12-year period in three oak cask types: American bourbon barrels, Spanish sherry butts, and uniquely, Spanish Malaga casks.
“Honey sweetness with pot still spices. Flavors of fresh coffee, creamy milk chocolate, and Crème Brûlée. Notes of red apples & toasted oak. Its finish is sophisticated and complex with a sweetness throughout, followed by a mix of red grape and dry barley upon exit.” (Note: We have replaced the ‘&’ sign with ‘and’ in the original quote.)
“More than two decades in wood has allowed the pot still spirit to develop a fruity character while mellowing its characteristic spiciness, with time finishing in a single Malaga cask adding layers of extra complexity,” said Billy Abbott, brand ambassador at The Whisky Exchange.
With 57.5% ABV, Yellow Spot 1999 is an exclusive product of The Whisky Exchange. Notes include vanilla toffee and freshly grated orange zest on the nose, brown sugar and spice on the palate, followed by spiced baked apples and fruit cake on the finish.
Chris Bolton, brand product manager at The Whisky Exchange, added: “We’re delighted to be one of the first retailers to bring a single cask Yellow Spot to the market.
“This is an exceptional example of long-aged Irish pot still whiskey much sought after by collectors and aficionados alike, especially from a brand with this kind of provenance.”
