Kamiki Shuzou Distillery Rolls Out First Single Malt Whisky
The Kamiki Shuzou Distillery has released its first Japanese single malt whisky. The 47% ABV whiskey was aged in oak barrels for three years and then finished in Japanese cedar casks. This makes it the first Japanese cedar cask-finished whisky in the world.
As per Kamiki, Japanese cedar has a distinctive fragrance and soft texture and is used to calm the mind and body for ages. Kamiki Shuzou Distillery is located in Soni, Nara Prefecture, known as the gateway to the Yamato Kingdom.
Notably, Kamiki Shuzou is considered the “intersection of tradition and innovation”. It is distilled from crystal-clear Soni Highlands water which is believed to play a key role in the whisky’s flavor.

On the nose, Kamiki reveals notes of green tea and sandalwood, along with cedar, cinnamon, and pine. On the palate, Kamiki displays floral notes that continue into a refreshing, forest-inspired finish.
According to a Kamiki Drinks spokesperson: “Kamiki Shuzou has transformed a century-old building into a modern distillery. It stands as a testament to sustainability and as a pioneering whisky facility that has woven together the rich, historical narrative of Japan with modern distillery practices. It epitomizes the brand’s deep-rooted connection to Japan’s early history and its enduring cultural heritage.
“Kamiki is the first company in the world to use local Japanese casks made from Yoshino Sugi to age its whiskies and now we are delighted to bring the first Kamiki Japanese single malt whisky to the market.”
In addition, Kamiki Single Malt will launch on the Japanese market, followed by a global rollout. Kamiki Drinks distributes Umiki whisky, Minoki rum, OakPacker American single malt, Aqvaranch vodka, and Aqvaranch gin.
Most Japanese spirits are created with underlying historic and traditional values which adds greater appeal to consumer. Kamiki is one great example of how clear water can inspire consumption.
