UK and Ireland Whisky Distilleries Get New Manufacturing L
Whisky distilleries across the UK and Ireland will soon be changing how they make drinks. The UK authorities have released a set of new production guidelines for whisky makers.
The British Standards Institution (BSI) has created new regulations that will affect the production of whisky. In a push to streamline product quality with international standards, the body has released a set of voluntary guidelines.
According to the BSI, the new standards were developed in collaboration with hundreds of distilleries and bottlers from Ireland and Scotland. The whisky experts worked together to form guidelines that brands may now adopt to improve their output quality.
In addition to general guidelines, other more detailed and process specifics were recommended. These include:
- Information on desired whisky color
- Whisky maturation time and minimum alcoholic strength
- Conceptual guidelines for packaging and labeling.
Will Whisky Distilleries Follow Suite?
The BSI has launched an ambitious program to include as many volunteer distilleries as possible. Such consolidation will transmit authenticity and premium quality from UK and Ireland producers. While many distilleries contributed experts, such as master distillers, to the project development, these renovation comes at a high cost.
It remains to be seen just how fast and how far are they prepared to go. Changing the color of whisky to one uniform color does encourage unity and market presence. However, this will also eliminate some ingredients that may prove inconvenient to some brands that depend on it for essence.
Scott Steedman, director general for standards at BSI said: “We hope the standard will create a benchmark for quality that will add value to the distillers who use it and increase the confidence of consumers everywhere.
“This new standard has global application and can help to facilitate the production and trade of high-quality whisky worldwide.”
The BSI has created a special technical committee that will supervise the implementation of these new standards.
