Chivas Brothers Possible Staff Strike Could Affect Festivities
A possible staff strike that could cripple the Chivas Brothers whisky and beverage production, comes one step closer today. The walkout would have detrimental consequences for the upcoming holidays and its beverage supplies in the Scottish market.
Chivas Brothers’ Workers Ballot
In the latest development workers were balloted for possible strike action. Results are yet released but are most likely to receive an overwhelming nod. Workers at the distillery are unhappy with salary negotiations after Chivas denied a request for a revision to a proposed 6.4% increase.
According to an insider report, Chivas Brothers are working with the Unite union which they earlier employed. The union opened a ballot today which will extend to November 20, 2023. The ballot gave workers the option to strike or accept the current 6.4%.
The implications are high for the possible staff walkout. The distillery does have its storehouses, but would hardly meet the holiday demands. This would force the company to import products resulting in higher prices, marketing problems, and possible product boycotts.
A spokesperson for the workers pointed out that the increase was unfair in light of the increase in demand for Chivas products. Chivas Brothers are producers of Chivas Regal whisky, Glenlivet, Ballantine’s, and Royal Salute. The beverage giant also produces other types of beverages including sodas.
Sharon Graham, Unite general secretary said:
“Strike action at Chivas Brothers is a step closer following the failure of the company to make our members a fair pay offer.”
