Bruichladdich Rolls Out Port Charlotte 18 Year Old
Port Charlotte 18 Year Old whisky has been released by Bruichladdich Distillery. This expression was distilled in 2001 and named after the Islay village near the distillery.
Notably this is the oldest whisky of this type and was matured entirely on the island. Its intricate flavor profile is driven by its long maturation in a combination of sherry and French oak oak barrels. Port Charlotte 18 Year Old is evocative of Islay, combining dried fruits, sweetness, and the distinctive barbeque peat smoke of Port Charlotte.
In addition to figs, sultanas, raisins, burnt heather, and spices, this whisky is enhanced with a smooth, rounded finish infused with peat smoke. Bruichladdich’s head distiller, Adam Hannett, describes the Port Charlotte 18 Year Old as an embodiment of Islay’s indomitable spirit and the evolution of both the island and the brand since 2001.
Bruichladdich Unveils Port Charlotte 18 Year Old
Head distiller, Adam Hannett, said: “This is a special moment in my career and it’s a privilege to finally share our Port Charlotte 18 Year Old with the world.
“This is the oldest expression of Port Charlotte we’ve released to date and it’s a real marker in time. It showcases how far the brand has come since its inception in 2001. From uncertainty and the brink of closure, this spirit was laid down in 2004 while Bruichladdich Distillery found its feet, making its release today even more poignant.”
On the palate, the oak is predominant, bringing toasted spices, cinnamon, and a tinge of nutmeg, moving into peat-infused scones, smoked popcorn, and salted caramel flavors. There is a delicate, elegant peat smoke that lingers on the smooth, beautifully rounded finish, with warm wood spices and a nutty salinity.
“This is a whisky dedicated to our island and our community. For me, it’s everything an Islay whisky can and should be.
“So much has evolved and changed on our island while these casks have been quietly maturing in our warehouses, and this 18 Year Old pays homage to our past while looking ahead to the future,” he added.
