Buffalo Trace Unveils Prohibition Collection
Buffalo Trace Distillery has released their third Prohibition Collection – a set of five whiskies produced at the George T Stagg Distillery during Prohibition, from 1920 to 1933 – Henry Watterson, Kentucky River, John G Carlisle, Walter B Duffy and Cove Spring.
The George T Stagg Distillery was one of only six distilleries granted licenses by the US government to legally bottle “medicinal whiskey” for prescription sales during Prohibition. The distillery was re-named Buffalo Trace in 1999 following acquisition by Sazerac.
The Buffalo Trace Prohibition Collection #3 Henry Watterson is named after US congressman and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Henry Watterson, known for his anti-Prohibition views and is a Kentucky straight rye whiskey bottled at whopping 70.3% alcohol by volume [140.6 proof] and said to contain notes of citrus, thyme and mint.
The Buffalo Trace Prohibition Collection #3 Kentucky River is a reference to the now-closed Kentucky River Distillery, and is a blend of Kentucky straight whiskies bottled at 50% alcohol by volume [100 proof] said to contain notes of apple, caramel and vanilla.
The Buffalo Trace Prohibition Collection #3 John G Carlisle is a bourbon named after another US congressman who helped craft the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897. It is also bottled at 50% alcohol by volume [100 proof] and is said to contain notes of orchard fruit, oak and vanilla.
The Buffalo Trace Prohibition Collection #3 Walter B Duffy, which is named after the owner of the George T Stagg Distillery following George T Stagg’s death in 1893. It is a blend of 10- and 14-year-old Kentucky straight bourbons, bottled at 53.5% alcohol by volume [107 proof] and is said to contain notes of anise, dates and figs.
The Buffalo Trace Prohibition Collection #3 Cove Spring is named after the nearby spring that birthed the distillery’s waters and is a wheated Kentucky straight bourbon bottled at 60.1% alcohol by volume [120.2 proof] and is said to produce notes of cherry, coconut and oak.
The Buffalo Trace Prohibition Collection #3 is only available as a set for $1000 per set of five 375ml bottles.
