A 40-year-old single malt whisky from Port Ellen is now available from Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky Ltd. It is a limited release of 209 bottles from cask number 667, one of the last batches produced before the distillery closed.
With a booming demand for smoky and peated malts, Port Ellen, a cult whisky among collectors, has become one of the most iconic and sought-after whiskies in the world.
History of Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky
In 1825, Alexander Kerr Mackay founded Port Ellen on Islay’s southern coast to produce whiskey for export to the United States. During Prohibition, the distillery initially went silent for 37 years in 1930.
After expanding from two to four stills in 1967, Port Ellen was resurrected due to the demand for peated whisky. However, Distillers Company Limited, which owned Port Ellen since 1925, closed its doors in 1983.
As part of Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky‘s attempt to modernize, the company has implemented new standards. They have released this first fill sherry cask 40-year-old single malt showcasing new aging and blending techniques. The expressions are conjured from the Port Ellen releases of the early 1980s.
Initially, the whisky was matured on Islay in a European Oak ex-sherry cask. Years later it was laid down to finish maturation in Duncan Taylor’s Aberdeenshire HQ vaults in 2010. The expression is now 104.8 proof.
Notably, an authenticated certificate of authenticity is included with each hand-finished decanter. The firm last produced a Port Ellen in 2013.
The Port Ellen 1983 will be launched on Saturday, September 30 at 2.30 PM. The ceremony will be held at the Whisky ‘Old & Rare’ Show in London. Tickets for the masterclass are available
The company will display the Port Ellen with limited samples at stand number 305 during the show.
