Gordon & MacPhail to Shift Focus to Inhouse Distilleries
More than a century has passed since Gordon & MacPhail started purchasing mature and reusing it to create their own unique whisky. As the years rolled on so did the company that fills casks from over 100 different distilleries. This has allowed consumers to experience new flavors from those of the original distilleries.
However, after 128 years of bottling from purchased matures, the company has decided to shift focus and produce whisky from its own. This has been in the making for some time now and is enhanced by three principal factors. Two of which are related to the internal plans of Gordon & MacPhail.
- Benromach: In 1993, Gordon & MacPhail acquired the Benromach Distillery. Located in Forres, the distillery has been producing whisky using only in-house material. The entire process is conducted by the company.
- The Carin Distillery: Then in 2022, the company opened a newly built distillery in the Cairngorm National Park. Empowered by two distilleries, they now had sufficient maturity to make their own whisky
- High Market Demand: As the world increases its whisky consumption, distilleries are running short on matures and have become more reluctant to sell. Most brands are now using all the in-house material they can produce and have been sending notices to Gordon & MacPhail, informing them of cancelation dates.
These three factors have made it opportune for the brand to go independent and work only with in-house material. However, the cut-off begins in 2024 but, there are still tons of whisky still in maturing stages that will become available later on. In addition, there are still stocks and casks stored up in many warehouses that will guarantee consumers a steady supply for years to come.
However, the company won’t be receiving new matures as of next year. As the company looks to empower its distilleries, we can expect to see new whiskies coming to the market soon.
