Macallan Debuts Cirque du Soleil-inspired Whiskies
Cirque du Soleil and The Macallan have partnered for the launch of two editions in their Harmony Collection. In celebration of The Macallan’s 200th anniversary, two expressions have been announced: Harmony Vibrant Oak, and Harmony Guardian Oak.
While Harmony Vibrant Oak expressions are matured primarily in first-fill American oak barrels, Guardian Oak is aged primarily in first-fill European oak barrels, with some second-fill Sherry barrels thrown in.
These whiskies demonstrate how oak plays a crucial role in creating different flavors, as well as the biggest differences between wood types. In addition to vanilla, lime, sweet oak, apples, and toasted almonds, Vibrant Oak also offers strong aromas of sherbet and lime zest on the nose, followed by lingering vanilla notes on the palate.

On the palate, Guardian Oak’s sticky ginger syrup sweetness and a burst of orange lead to opulent glazed dates, while hints of warming nutmeg and dark chocolate can be found, as well. This whiskey is 44.2% ABV.
Diane Stuart, whisky maker at The Macallan said: “Vibrant Oak and Guardian Oak provided an opportunity to select the casks that deliver the classic characteristics of our two key wood types, Sherry-seasoned American oak and Sherry-seasoned European oak casks, showcasing the differences these wood types deliver.”
Its Sherry-seasoned oak casks are heralded as the ‘greatest contributor’ to the quality, distinctive aromas, and flavors of its whisky, each cask having been built to meticulous specifications over five years. Up to 80% of its flavor is derived from the barrels.
There have been four editions of this series, celebrating The Macallan’s relationship with oak. Last month, the brand partnered with a fourth sherry cask supplier, ensuring a steady supply of European oak casks. The Macallan also partnered with Stella and Mary McCartney on Harmony series additions. The distillery will continue to unveil new partnerships during its Harmony series.
