SMWS Launches New Online Whisky Course
A new whisky course has been developed by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS). The Focus on Flavour course is released in partnership with The Edinburgh Whisky Academy (EWA).
This online course and accompanying tasting pack are available to both SMWS members and nonmembers. New members can enroll for £75 while returning members can register for £75.
In this course, students will learn how each part contributes to the final profile of a whisky. From malting, mashing, and fermentation to charring, toasting, and wood types, all aspects of the process are covered.
In addition. The course includes five videos, online materials, articles, and four 50ml samples selected randomly from four different casks. Notably, the samples are without name, distillery code, or flavor profile, so students can taste and discern the flavors on their own.

Students will take an online test and receive a certificate once they pass the test. Laphroaig pays tribute to characters from its history with its new Limited Series Double Gold Medal-Winners from the 2024 North American Bourbon & Whiskey Competition.
Anne Phillips, Marketing Director at The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, said: “At the SMWS we believe whisky is for everyone, and developed this course to share our expertise gleaned over 40 years of whisky creation with anyone who wishes to find out more about this incredible and diverse spirit.”
Furthermore, the Focus on Flavour course explains the Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s approach to bottling whisky. Each SMWS bottling is assigned a particular flavor profile based on flavors from individual casks.
According to the online Wikipedia “The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, founded in Edinburgh in 1983, is a membership organization that bottles and sells single cask, single malt whisky. It purchases individual casks from more than 170 malt whisky distilleries in Scotland and throughout the world, bottles them, and retails directly to its members. “
