Solved! The Macallam £1.1 Million Whisky Bottle Sale Mystery
The year-long mystery surrounding the anonymous sale of a Macallam £1.1 million whisky has been solved. On May 25, 2022, the world’s largest bottle of whisky was sold in an auction in Edinburgh. Although the price was published on worldwide media, the mysterious buyer remained unknown. Here are the details.
The Whisky – World’s Largest Bottle of Whisky
Taller than the average human! Contains more than an oil barrel! It’s a spirit! It’s a malt! – It’s a whisky bottle!
Yes! The world’s largest bottle of whisky stands 5 feet 11 inches (5′ 11”) and holds 311 liters. More like a giant prototype, the bottle of 1989 Macallan single malt was designed by Daniel Monk of Cask World and Rosewin Holdings.
According to Sky News, the bottle was filled with 32-year-old Macallan single malt Scotch. It was then bottled by Duncan Taylor’s.
The Auction
Shortly afterward, the world’s largest bottle of whisky arrived at the Lyon & Turnbull auction in Edinburgh. The whisky was auctioned for a record-breaking price of £1.1 million on May 25, 2022. Even though the record for the world’s most expensive whisky no longer rests with Macallan, it was so then.
As expected the world media lit up with the news, only to leave the whisky community disappointed. Wondering who had so much money? And where in… was that whisky now?
Unraveling the Whisky Mystery
A Vietnamese businessman with a spirits collection worth more than £150 million has been revealed as the buyer of the whisky. Viet Nguyen Dinh Tuan won the auction but decided to remain anonymous. However, pushed by the Guinness World Record, he went public to receive the certificate.
Taun added the bottle, called the Intrepid, to his collection in Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday along with a Guinness World Records certificate. The collector has spent decades building his whisky library, investing millions to boast its current plethora.
