Torres Whisky – Launches Liathmor With French Partnership
Torres, best known for producing Torres Brandy, has released its first whisky, Liathmor, in partnership with La Martiniquaise-Bardinet. The French brand is the producer of blended Scotch brands Label 5, Cutty Sark, and Speyside single malt Glen Moray.
The new 40% ABV expression features:
- 20% Speyside malted barley,
- 40% grain aged between three and five years, releasing ‘fruit and freshness’
- and 40% grain aged five years, for ‘structure and density’.
According to the manufacturer, the resulting liquid has a soft, drinkable profile, with a complex nose that includes vanilla, apple and pear, honey and compote. On the palate, Liathmor leaves subtle aromas rounded out by notes of malted barley and oak.
Family Torres Launches New Whisky Brand: Liathmor
There is a story that tells how a well-known explorer climbed Ben Macdui, the highest point in the Cairngorm mountains. It is also the second highest in the British Isles. That year, 1891, was the year the whisky was first crafted.
During the explorer’s journey, he encountered a creature known as the Greyman (Liathmor in Gaelic). According to Scottish folklore, this creature haunts the summit. The whisky was named after the creature.
“It’s the first time we’re entering a category beyond grape, but it’s also one of the biggest categories, where we see there is a lot of opportunities,” Christian Visalli, global spirits director of Juan Torres Master Distillers, told The Spirits Business.
“We wanted to have a whisky that is very approachable and not only for the traditional whisky drinkers. It goes within the competitive benchmark for Johnnie Walker Red and Ballantine’s Finest.”
Familia Torres is a family-owned business with its own spirit division called Juan Torres Master Distillers. The Liathmor whisky will initially be available in Spain, the Baltics, Germany, Estonia, Canada, and the Nordic markets.
In addition, Torres Brandy produces Spain’s number one brandy, El Gobernador pisco from Chile, Magdala orange liqueur from Mexico, and Casals vermouth from Brazil. Last month, Mexico’s José Alberto del Toro won the Torres Brandy Zero Challenge 2024 for his sustainability efforts.
