120 Year Old Coopers Brewery Launches Distillery
Coopers Brewery, Australia’s largest independent brewer, has opened a $70 million (US$46 million) whisky facility. It is the company’s first expansion into whisky production in its 162-year history.
A new AU$70m brand home, adjacent to the brewery in Adelaide, houses the distillery. The new facility features custom-made copper whisky stills from Scotland. Using a complete cycle, Coopers Brewery produces its own malt on site for use in whisky production.
Coopers Brewery held an opening event on August 6, which will open to the public on August 28. Other features include a restaurant, three bars, a tasting room, and a microbrewery. Plus an underground stillage for 5,000 barrels of whisky, and a merchandise store.
Coopers Brewery Goes into Whisky Production After 120 Years
“This is one of the most exciting projects we’ve undertaken in the 162-year history of Coopers Brewery.” said managing director Dr Tim Cooper.
“Our team has been humbled by the public’s interest, excitement, and support as this impressive building has taken shape.
“We wanted every aspect to be truly world-class and of the highest quality. It’s a significant, long-term investment by our family company and our vote of confidence in the future of Coopers and Australia’s manufacturing industry.
“Coopers is very proud to have created a highly unique and immersive experience that ultimately celebrates the very best of Australian beer. We look forward to welcoming visitors from across Australia and overseas into our new home.
“At the same time, our brewing and distilling team is focused on the opportunities that will emerge from the on-site microbrewery and whisky distillery.”
Expanding its team expertise, it has hired Peter Morelli, a veteran of the Australian hospitality industry. As venue manager, he will oversee the 24-strong team across the restaurant and bars. With a capacity to accommodate 400 people, Coopers has one of the largest venues in the country.
Moreover, Coopers Brewery tours will now feature VIP experiences at the new site.
