Indri Whisky Marks Incrredible Milestone
Despite launching just two years ago, Indi, an Indian single malt whisky, has already sold 100,000 cases. The milestone makes it the world’s fastest-growing liquor, according to the Economic Times (ET).
“In a market once dominated by imported labels, Indri stands tall as a beacon of Indian excellence. It’s not just a brand; it’s a symbol of national pride, elevating the status of Indian spirits to unparalleled heights,” said Praveen Malviya, chief executive officer (CEO) of Piccadily Distilleries, which makes the malt.
The report further indicates that this single malt began in a small sugar mill in Indri, Haryana, and has grown over 500 percent since its launch. It aims to have over 30 percent market share.
One important data provided by the ET report exposed the gap between local production and imports. Approximately 675,000 cases (each containing nine liters) of single malts were sold in India in 2023. Domestic production contributed approximately 345,000 cases, while Scottish and other producers collectively sold 330,000 cases.
Indri Whisky Sets New World Record for Liquor Sales
According to the credit rating agency ICRA, Indian alcoholic beverages are expected to achieve higher profit margins and increased sales in 2025.
In addition, the ICRA predicts revenue growth of between 8-10 percent for some domestic alcoholic beverage firms in FY25. ideally, there will be revenue increases of 11-13 percent for Indian-made foreign beverages enterprises. The growth is driven by brand premiumization with a volume increase anticipated to be by 3-5 percent.
According to ET, despite optimistic forecasts for the Indian alcohol industry’s future, state taxes and anti-climatic conditions pose particular challenges. India’s climate differs from that of Scotland’s for a single malt to thrive.
Furthermore, the India-UK Free Trade Agreement is expected to transform the alcoholic beverage sector in the country.
Indri has received numerous recognitions worldwide. The ET report states that the Indri Diwali Collector’s Edition 2023 was awarded the “Double Gold Best In Show” award at one of the world’s largest whisky-tasting competitions. This competition includes over 100 varieties of whisky annually from around the world.
