Metropolis – Compass Box Distillery Adds Metropolis Whisky to Extinct Blends Quartet
Metropolis whisky has become the latest expression in the Extinct Blends Quartet series. Scotch whisky distillery Compass Box continues to revive forgotten tastes in its portfolio.
According to the distillery, the special collection will feature four bottlings in a whisky renaissance. The project will roll back the curtain of whiskies lost to history to open a new homage to spirits. Metropolis whisky became the third addition to the edition which adds intrinsic tastes from vanished characters and flavors.
Crafting Metropolis Whisky
Listening to the Master Distiller at Compass Box, James Saxon, there is some science involved in the process.
“Whilst extinct distilleries can be revived – mash tuns refilled and stills heated up again, blends of the past cannot be recreated at scale. These formulae encapsulate specific moments in time – the result of relationships, ideas, and people,” explained the brand.
“With each whisky in this series, Compass Box takes inspiration from these vanished characters and flavors, reappraising four very different expressions of blended Scotch, using some of their most precious parcels of whisky.”
In addition, the wide variety of chosen flavors paved the way for eventual casking. The spirit was matured in Sherry casks emitting a dried fruit essence layered with creamy grain whisky. Added to its essence are the aroma of hot metal and smoke from shipyards. All dubbing the base of an old malt whisky.
Saxon mentioned that the whisky was a collective reflection of the community.
“For us, Metropolis represents all the people, places, and moments that blend together, making city life so vibrant. We really wanted to capture the soul of blended Scotch that continues to reside in the city today.”
Furthermore, Metropolis whisky joins two other spirits, Ultramarine and Delos, in the special collection. The Extinct Blends Quartet has so far explored and incorporated forgotten expressions from the following distilleries:
- Caol Ila and Glendullan distilleries
- Glen Elgin, Imperial, and Miltonduff distilleries
- Cameronbridge and Girvan distilleries
All expressions are available on the Compass Box Distillery website.
