No World Cup? Irish Make More Whisky Instead
With their 2014 World Cup hopes ended, the Irish have turned to doing what they do best – make whiskey. In this case, it will be Irish whiskey makers Walsh Whiskey Distillery [producers of The Irishman and Writers Tears whiskey brands] joining up with Italian company Illva Saronno [producers of Amaretto Di Saronno liqueur] to build a new distillery in Carlow, Ireland that will be able to produce 400,000 cases annually at the outset. Currently, Walsh Whiskey Distillery distributes to 30 countries – primarily the USA, Russia, France, Germany and several Scandinavian countries – but the new distillery is expected to allow WWD to triple that distribution.
The new distillery will generate all four types of Irish whiskey – pot, malt, grain and blended – and is expected to become operational in 2016.
