Single Malt Welsh Whisky Gets Protective Status
Imitations are widespread and in every industry, there are copycats ready to saturate markets with cheap knockoffs. The whisky industry is no exception. On July 24, 2023, another British company was given full protection of the copyright law.
Single Malt Welsh Whisky was successfully registered under the UK Geographical Indication (UKGI) scheme today The move affords it protection for its name, authenticity, and characteristics. The new scheme was created after Brexit and this is the first UK spirit drink to be introduced below the law.
The distillery was founded in 1887 and uses four distributors to retail its wine throughout other countries. The product is registered to four distillers in Wales, who are responsible for the exportation to over 45 countries worldwide including the USA, France, Germany, and China.
The law requires that the production process occurs in Wales, — from brewing to bottling. It is believed that the moderate and damp Welsh climate enhances an even rate of maturation, producing a smooth and sparkling flavor. it is no surprise that most local Welsh distilleries still have their own well or borehole to take advantage of Wales’s fames fresh and high-quality water.
Food and Farming Secretary Therese Coffey was energized by the success of the whisky maker. she said
“Single Malt Welsh Whisky is widely acclaimed for its lightness of character and I am pleased to announce it will be the first protected spirit under our UKGI scheme at the Royal Welsh Show.
“It shows how the UK government is ready to get behind the best of British food and drink from across the nation – to boost sales at home and abroad, create jobs and grow our economy.’
As the British economy looks for loopholes that threaten producers, the world is more concerned about tastes and spirits. In their glass, protected or not, they won’t be fooled by a copy.
