The Macallan Auctions Another “Extraordinarily Rare” Whisky
There is a chance to win a decanter of whisky that has been aged for more than 70 years. Another spirit will face the hammer as The Macallan continues to set history. It was distilled in Scotland during the Second World War and is expected to fetch up to £160,000 at auction.
In 1940, The Macallan 81-year-old, “The Reach”, was distilled on Speyside from a single sherry-seasoned oak cask. The spirit was released in a limited edition of only 288 decanters cradled by three bronze hands.
According to The Grand Whisky Auction, this featured “extraordinarily rare” decanter has an estimated price of £125,000-160,000. The lot, which closes on June 12, has already surpassed £125,000 in bids, which equates to over £6,000 per dram.

Beau Wallace, director, The Grand Whisky Auction, said: “The Macallan 81-Year Old, The Reach, is celebrated as the oldest whisky ever released by The Macallan.
“We, at The Grand Whisky Auction, are fortunate enough to see all kinds of vintage bottles. However, very few are as rare and as spectacular as this, what can only be described as a work of art.”
It is the oldest aged whisky released by The Macallan, following the 78-year-old expression released in 2020 as part of the limited edition “Red Collection”. The Reach was created in 1940, just before the anti-whisky laws forced the distillery to close for the first time.
The mouthblown glass decanter is cradled on a bronze sculpture with three hands created by Scottish sculptor Saskia Robinson. It is an homage to three prominent characters from The Macallan’s history.
In 1940, one of the elm trees on The Macallan Estate fell to the ground. The tree was used to make the cabinet that houses the decanter and sculpture.
The Macallan is a world-renowned brand that holds the record for auctioning the world’s most expensive whisky.
