Mackmyra Svensk Whisky debuts Sweden’s first 20-year-old whisky. The distillery became the first Swedish beverage company to release a spirit of that matured age.
Sweden is celebrating a historic milestone as it joins top whisky-producing countries that have released decades-old expressions. The feat was achieved by a local whisky distillery Mackmyra Svensk. This promotes the company as a pioneer in setting industry standards.
In 1999, after founding the company during a ski trip, the company rolled the first Swedish single malt whisky. However, the company’s innovations go further, including storing whisky in underground mines. Years later, it created an environment-friendly distillery campus, employing gravity to transfer the whisky ingredients.
Savoring Mackmyra Svensk Whisky
According to fabrication details, the unique expression was aged over twenty years in used bourbon casks. The single malt whisky was matured some 50 meters subterranean in the Bodas mine.
In addition, the whisky was crafted using Mackmyra’s special recipe and bottled at a single cask strength in December 2022. With noted essence of malt notes, vanilla ice cream, and pears. Traces of blended spices allude to arrack and citrus. These can unravel to share hints of mire and pepper.
Mackmyra Whisky is a Swedish single malt whisky distillery named after the village and manor of Mackmyra, where it was established in the southwest of Gävle. It is commonly suggested that the toponym is derived from owlet moths and mires.
The company was founded in 1999 by Magnus Dandanell, Carl-Johan Kastengren, and about five others. In 2020 Mangnus Dandanell handed over the CEO role to the current Johan Larsson.
