The Devil Drinks Oloroso – This Is Halloween
Several spooky drams have been released by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society for Halloween, and if you are a fan of sherried whisky then try this one. Chief among these is The Devil Drinks Oloroso.
In a dark abyss where barrels are sent to repent, ‘The Devil Drinks Oloroso’ is a 16 Year Old Mannochmore whisky distilled in 2006. The whiskey spent 13 years in a bourbon hogshead before a 3-year finish in an Oloroso hogshead.
One of the most amazing tasting notes is written for the single malt whisky. The SWWS describes it as follows
A dash of holy water, however, delivered nut husk from evil and showered us with heavenly orange blossom, dried fruits and angelic Turkish delight. Coffee beans were baptised with cocktail bitters and malted biscuits saw the golden light of sunshine through oloroso. This initially spent 13 years in a bourbon hogshead before being transferred to a Spanish oak oloroso hogshead.
The Devil Drinks Oloroso Considered The Best Halloween Whisky
It is rare to see a single malt produced by Mannochmore Distillery in Speyside, but the 12 Year Old from Diageo‘s Flora & Fauna collection is your most common bottling. Nevertheless, ‘The Devil Drinks Oloroso’ is one of its most popular whiskies. It has become a Halloween treat for whisky lovers every year since 2006.
Quoting the SWMS once again, this is a rather haunting spirit.
In a dark abyss where casks are sent to repent, cocoa nibs, nutmeg and bitter chocolate truffles conspired to corrupt oblivious almonds, chestnuts and tangy orange skin. Black tea and coffee crept in from behind a mound of cinnamon sticks and liquorice, while hot cross buns and oak became scorched and charred by the flames of the devil’s own tobacco pipe.
One of the most famous Mannochmore whiskies is the Loch Dhu 10 Year Old The Black Whisky. Controversial due to its alleged overuse of spirit caramel, it has seen divisive reviews online.
