Diageo Halts Construction of Crown Royal Whisky Distillery in Canada
Crown Royal Whisky has put a halt to the development of a $245 million (US $175.7 million) distillery in Canada’s St. Clair Township, according to a report released by Just Drinks on Wednesday.
The facility’s plans were initially revealed in 2022 as a component of Diageo’s sustainability plan, “Spirit of Progress.” On 400 acres of industrially zoned land, the project was supposed to include carbon-neutral distilling, blending, and warehousing facilities. Early reports stated that the new site would replace all of Diageo’s current manufacturing operations in the nation.
Crown Royal is now “indefinitely” postponing those plans to return to its primary distillery located in Gimli, Manitoba.
“Given the dynamic nature of our broader business and our emphasis on productivity, we have decided to pause the development of our facility in Lambton County’s St Clair Township,” Crown Royal owner Diageo said in a statement distributed to news outlets on Wednesday.
“We will be revisiting plans and timeline at a later date, as part of our regular review of investments and priorities across our supply chain footprint.”

The world’s best-selling Canadian whisky, Crown Royal, has started releasing several new products in 2024. The brand uncorked its first Single Malt, a 31-year Blended Whisky that costs about $600, and a pre-batched Cherry Sour cocktail in addition to its eagerly awaited Blackberry flavor. With sales of 7.7 million liter cases worldwide in 2023, the brand enjoys immense appeal both domestically and abroad.
“They didn’t give an explanation,” Agar told The Independent. “But they are not selling the property and, who knows – it’s hard to say what they are thinking – hopefully they will still come.”
