Duncan Taylor Rolls Out 2 New Single Malt Whiskies
When the Lochside Distillery was demolished in 2005, a part of its heritage remained in spirits being released. Two new whiskies have joined the rarest and oldest expressions on shelves today. In tribute to the rich history of Lochside, Duncan Taylor has launched a 40-year-old and a 60-year-old spirit.
Both whiskies are part of Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky’s Rarest Edition Collection. The first, dubbed the Miltonduff whisky, comes from a cask from 1942. An iconic moment as the distillery is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year.
According to Duncan Taylor, Miltonduff single malts have not been seen since the 1980s. The distillery was sold in 2005 and is currently undergoing a major upgrade. Described by Duncan Taylor as ‘rich and full-bodied’, the 41-year-old whisky carries fruit notes and creamy overtones.
Duncan Taylor Lochside 60-Year-Old Blended Scotch Whisky
Known for its honeyed and orchard fruit flavors, Lochside Distillery operated for 35 years between 1957 and 1992. The history rolls back as far as 1772 when the Littlemill Distillery operated in Montrose, Scotland. The 60-year-old blended Scotch whisky from Duncan Taylor is ‘rich and fresh’ on the nose, with notes of forest fruits.
Online retailer, The Spirits Embassy is offering both whiskies through a ballot until midnight on 21 July. Only 30 bottles of Lochside are available, while 20 bottles of Miltonduff are on sale.
One of the newest distilleries in Scotland, Lochside distillery was built by McNab distilleries in 1957. It was previously a Deuchar’s Beer brewery transformed into a Malt Whisky facility.
Located in Angus, Lochside was a distillery that produces single malt Scotch whiskies and grain whiskies. It was formerly owned by Macnab Distillery Ltd., and later by the former drinks and restaurant giant Allied Domecq. Currently, it was bought by Pernod Ricard in 2005.
Despite debates on the reason for its closure in 1992, most writers cite the surplus production of which Allied Domecq had no way to export. Although only planning a temporal closure, the distillery was never revived.
