Bladnoch Rolls Out Peated Whisky Range
One of the oldest distilleries in the Scottish Lowlands has launched a special collection of peated whiskies. The Bladnoch has released five unique expressions to its whisky library.
Bladnoch Alinta, Alinta Reserve, 2009 Sherry Hogshead, 2009 Rum Cask, and 2009 Bourbon Barrel are the five distinct varieties.
The Five New Spirits By Bladnoch Whisky Distillery
Since David Prior took over the Bladnpch Whisky distillery in 2015, the latter four whiskies will join the Bladnoch Alinta as the sole peated expressions added to the lineup. The Bladnoch Alinta, which was originally released last year and is now bottled at 47% ABV, was produced using both Pedro Ximénez (PX) Sherry and former Bourbon casks. It was unlike anything the distillery had produced when it was finished.
The collection was developed by Dr. Nick Savage, master distiller of Bladnoch, who used three single rum, Bourbon, and sherry hogshead casks from Bladnoch‘s 2009 maturing stocks for the Alinta Reserve and 100% first-fill Amontillado Sherry hogshead casks for the rest.
The collection aims to highlight the “rareness, scarcity, and singularity of Bladnoch’s peated history.”
The Bladnoch Peated Collection was inspired by our 2009 stocks, which are distinctively 100% peated, said Savage. Although lowland single malt isn’t often peated, Alinta’s release received an incredible response from the public.
”I wanted to extend this limited but unique peated section in our portfolio for those who enjoy the smoky styles of Bladnoch. Our peated collection is an annual celebration of the extremely unique and rare 2009 stocks at Bladnoch.’’
Each year, Savage will choose a small batch of 2,000 bottles of the Alinta Reserve (46.7% ABV). White chocolate and smokey campfire flavors are present in this year’s batch.
262 bottles of the Sherry Hogshead whisky (58.3% ABV) were made. It is stated to have an aroma of nutmeg and dates and a tongue of plum jam and a smoky campfire. ‘Comforting flavor of burning Christmas cake’ describes the finish.
In the meantime, 248 bottles of the 2009 Rum Cask edition (54.1% ABV) are still on the market; this one boasts a subtly dry’ finish and flavors of apple pie and sugarcane.
