McDowell’s No.1 Is Number 1
It is not every day that you are crowned by your title, but this Indian whisky is the number one selling spirit around the globe. The data was released by the marketing firm IMARC Group, which concluded the global whisky consumption for the fiscal year 2022. The report showed the top 25 best selling whisky on the planet plus detailing how many million cases of whisky they sold.
McDowells No. 1 surpassed its closest rival by more than 10- million cases of spirits. The Indian single malt drink sold an impressive 38 million cases of whisky in 2022. The brand has been around for more than 125 years and is believed to have over 25 million followers.
History of McDowell’s No. 1
The whisky was named after Scottish distiller Angus McDowell, who established McDowell and Company in India in 1898. At the time it was an extension of the McDowell of Scotland. The company was acquired by the UB Group of Vittal Mallya in 1951.
By 1961, the UB Group had created India’s first distillery in Cherthala. About four years later, McDowell’s No.1 brand was launched. During the early 2000s, the company renamed itself several times, finally keeping its current name which was adopted in 2006. McDowell’s No. 1 is known and registered as United Spirits Limited (USL).
The brand has led the whisky industry for decades, outselling in sizes and flavors. Data released by Statista shows that USL achieved retail sales worth $3.8 billion in 2012-13, selling nearly half a billion 750 ml bottles of its whisky, rum, and brandy.
