Singleton of Dufftown 12 Year Old
It is because of days like today that I couldn’t possibly leave this place. Many are the times when I’ve thought about packing my bags and selling everything I don’t need, to leave the coldness of the Scottish winter and move to Southeast Asia for good. But then comes spring, then comes summer, and the stunning beauty of my beloved city reminds me of why I haven’t yet, and never will, let the winter scare me away. To the suns tingling warmth, to the golden rays that bring out the luster in cold stone of which Edinburgh is built, to the proud Scottish people and to the magnificent grandeur of Auld Reekie – I raise my glass, of The Singleton of Dufftown!
In my glass is, as just mentioned, a measure of Singleton of Dufftown 12 year old. A speyside whisky, Singleton is, or so I believe, the second largest of alcoholic beverage giant Diageo’s 27 distilleries. Rather unfortunately, most of the whisky produced at the distillery is sold on to blenders and make up a part of, amongst others, Johnnie Walker and (oh, what shameful waste!) Bell’s.
With some whisky the nose and palate can be quite different from each other, but such is not the case with Dufftown. Both bring to mind that wonderful day of baking with mom before Christmas; toasted nuts, baked apples seasoned with fresh vanilla and cinnamon, brown sugar and caramelized almonds. This whisky is, without question, best served without ice or water.
Color: Mahogany gold.
Nose/Taste: Toasted nuts, caramelized almonds, baked apple, cinnamon, vanilla, warm brown sugar.
A good whisky indeed, and without doubt worth trying, though it is my opinion that it lacks one thing in particular: a hint of saltiness, something which I think goes incredibly well with the type of sweetness present in this whisky. I’m sure there are plenty of people who would disagree with that, though.
