Broken Bones Distillery Sets to Increase Spirits Production
As it works to increase its bottle output by 2027, Slovenian distillery Broken Bones has installed a new mash tun, fermenter, and pot still. Within three years, Broken Bones hopes to produce more than 20,000 bottles of whisky annually using the new equipment. The distillery produces gins and two whiskies, one peated and one unpeated.
In addition, a trial run of the new equipment will begin towards the end of March and the beginning of April. A batch of Broken Bones Single Malt Whisky is also being bottled for the first time in 2024.
The single malt is unique in its taste profile, characterized by hints of floral and spicy notes. It was aged for three years in Slovenian and American oak barrels before bottling at 46% ABV. It does not contain any artificial coloring or chill filters.
The Birth of Broken Bones Distillery
Founded in 2012, Broken Bones Distillery began when Borut Osojnik, head distillery, and Botjan Marui, CEO, wanted to create a Slovenian whisky able to compete with Scotch Whisky. The distillery described the process on its website in more detail.
”When Borut called Boštjan in 2012 and suggested that they join forces and make Slovenian whiskey that can compete with the best Scotch whiskies, they had a long road ahead of education, research, experimentation, and development. First, they decided on the style of whisky, designed and made the pot still themselves, and chose malt, yeast, size, and type of barrels … Then came the period of aging in various combinations of Slovenian and American barrels, with tasting and developing the drink.” The home page declares.
After two unfortunate accidents occurred during the founders’ brainstorming process, they named their distillery Broken Bones. The injuries were only days apart during which one broke a leg, and the other broke his nose.
Not all whisky distilleries were created equal. Some, like The Macallan, in the middle of World Wars, others like Broken Bones, in ache and pain.
