From Moonshine To Single Malt
Finding moonshine in the state of Nebraska – or roughly the 900-mile radius thereabouts – is rarely a problem, finding single malt whiskies, however – that is more problematic. Mostly because Nebraska happens to be located amidst cornfields in the USA and not in Speyside in Scotland. But Nebraskans are nothing if not resilient and after two year of aging in American oak barrels, Cut Spike Distillery has produced their first single malt whiskey [and one of the few single malts in America] for the market. Cut Spike is made from the limestone-filtered waters of Nebraska, is aged for two years and comes in at 86 proof [43% alcohol].
Currently, with a production of under 300 barrels, Cut Spike is available only in the Omaha “metropolitan” area but the distillery hopes to expand their volume and distribution in 2014.
