MLB Deems Traveller To Be A Home Run
Major League Baseball has named their first official whiskey and it is Traveller Blended Whiskey, a collaborative concoction created by Buffalo Trace Distillery’s master distiller Harlen Wheatley and Grammy-winning country music performer Chris Stapleton. Traveller Blended Whiskey’s designation as MLB’s official premier whiskey partner means the whiskey will be highlighted during game broadcasts, as well […]
House Of Hazelwood Begins 100-Year Journey With 60-Year-Old
Speyside-based House of Hazelwood, owned by the Gordon family [in turn, owners of William Grant & Sons], have released One For The Next – a 60-year-old blended single grain whisky that will mark the beginning of a decade-by-decade journey to building a collection of whiskies eventually reaching a 100-year-old single grain whisky. Hazelwood House is […]

Beam, Jack, Cola
I was invited to join a few friends for a picnic in the Meadows (a big park area in central Edinburgh) today – cue the coldest day in 3 weeks – and on the way there I went to a store to pick up some beer, and I happened to spot a can of ready mixed Jim Beam Kentucky Bourbon & Cola. I’ve noticed Jack Daniels & Cola popping up […]
Stewart Brewery Pilsen and my pick of the Fringe
It was Tuesday, and I was going out to see a show. Environmentally conscious as I am, and a decent enough evening as it was, I decided to ride my bike to the bar where I was meeting my dear friend before going to a comedy show (the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, which is the world’s biggest comedy/arts festival, is on at the moment). Inevitably, I ended up having just one […]
Whisky Ice Cream
It must have been some 10, perhaps more, years ago that I watched some cooking show or other on TV and this little recipe caught my eye. As with so many another things, though, my memory of it slipped away along with the piece of paper on which I had scribbled down the recipe. I don’t know about you, but I like when that happens – I like having a […]
Cutty Sark
As I’m not the biggest drinker of blended malts in the world, I’ve only really had a select few and out of them I only like half a handful. To cut a long story short, I thought it was about time I added another expression to my list of blends that have had the pleasure of ending up in my belly. As I didn’t really have one in mind when […]
Glenfiddich Secret Box
I’m officially excited, guys. Glenfiddich got in touch with me a while back asking if I might be interested in sampling one of their products – and who would I be to say no to that? I’ve had a couple of samplers sent to me from distillers before, and what normally happens is that they send out a small 1.5oz teaser bottle. Glenfiddich, however, decided to put a rather different […]
Whisky Region: Lowlands
We’ve already dipped into the Highlands, Islay, Speyside and Campbeltown regions and the end of this little series of the Scottish distillery regions is getting close. With only two regions to go, namely Lowlands and Islands, I’ve decided to leave Islands until last and look now at the region which comprises the distillery which lays nearest my own home town – Lowlands.
Benromach 10 Year Old
Founded in 1898 by Duncan McCallum and F.W. Brickman, the Speyside Benromach distillery was purchased by Gordon & MacPhail in 1993 after 10 spending 10 years in hibernation who reopened it in 1998. Since then they’ve released a few different bottling to different acclaim, and in late 2009 their first 10 year old expression saw daylight – and that’s what I’ll be dowsing my palate with today.
Whisky Cocktail: Lynchburg Lemonade
While this isn’t a complicated cocktail as such, it may take a bit more work than the others I’ve posted so far. This is due to the fact that you may not be able to find one of the ingredients, Sour Mix, in your local shop and thus would either have to order it online or make it yourself. For the great number of Jack Daniel’s fans out there, though, […]
Macallan 10 Year Old Fine Oak
After browsing my cupboard for whiskies not yet reviewed on the blog, I found my bottle of Macallan 10 year old Fine Oak, a most suitable whisky indeed. Macallan was founded by Alexander Reid in 1824, and has since grown to become one of the most popular and well-known single malts in the world. For good reason, too, as most of their expressions are worthy of the price they carry. […]
Whisky Region: Islay
For the fourth article in this little series on the regions of Scotland, as I’ve come to call it, and having already taken a look at the Highlands, Speyside and Campbeltown regions, it’s time to move on to something a bit more fiery – or smoky, at least. Having risen to quite some fame in the last few decades, the Islay region is cherished by many for its exceedingly potent […]
The perfect chocolate
According to the Scotsman, the Scotch Whisky Experience has engaged in a little joint venture with Edinburgh chocolatier Coco Chocolate with the aim to create the perfect chocolate to go with a glass of whisky. Whether this is possible or not – I personally think certain chocolates go better with certain whisky – I like the idea, and may have to head over there and see if I can pick […]
National Scotch Day
I received an e-mail a couple of days ago informing me that July 27th is National Scotch Day. It would seem that national scotch day is an American celebration, and I’ve never actually heard of it before… So I decided to give it a quick Google to see if I could find out more, which unfortunately I could not. All I found was the odd post on various blogs where […]
Penderyn Madeira Finished
It’s summer, it’s rainy, I’m sat indoors and I’m bored of Scotland. Really bored, in fact, as the weather has been horrible these past few weeks and I’m about as tanned and healthy as a dead sperm whale. With the forecast promising another 5 days of heavy rain showers, stupid clouds and temperatures soaring to some 17 degrees, I can’t wait to go down south for my holiday which will […]
Whicky Cocktail: Manhattan
I’ve already posted a recipe for Rob Roy, which may seem a bit backwards, seeing as it is basically a variation of Manhattan, which is seen as the “original”. The difference between a classic Manhattan (there are many varieties) and a Rob Roy is basically the Whisk(e)y used – while Rob Roy uses Scottish whisky, a Manhattan is made with Bourbon or Rye. You’ll need: 2c of Rye whiskey or […]
Rittenhouse Straight Rye
I love history, I love whisky and I occasionally love whiskey. Annoyingly, I had a look around for Rittenhouse history but found pretty much nothing; mostly what I came across focused on the history of Rye whiskey and the 1790’s Whiskey Rebellion, which it is said to have inspired.
Whisky Region: Campbeltown
In the previous two entries we’ve visited the biggest region, Highlands, and the region which hosts the highest number of distilleries, Speyside. Continuing along the same theme, which has turned out (surprisingly even to myself as I did not set out with any particular plan or theme as to the order in which I am presenting the regions) to be extremes, this post will focus on Campbeltown.
